Michael James, Assistant Principal

AP

Greetings KES Tigers!

I am thrilled to introduce myself as the new Assistant Principal at Kenansville Elementary School. It is an honor to be a Tiger once again, and I am excited to embark on this collaborative journey with all of you! I am no stranger to Tiger country, as I am a proud graduate of James Kenan High School.

I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from North Carolina State University (GO PACK!), a Masters Degree in Mind, Brain, & Teaching and School Administration & Supervision add-on from Johns Hopkins University, and a Master’s degree in Counseling from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Prior to my current role as an assistant principal, I have served as a licensed professional school counselor, a licensed therapist, a business education teacher, a college advisor, and in various capacities within a higher education setting. These experiences have shaped my passion for fostering a supportive and nurturing learning environment for both students and staff.

My leadership philosophy is centered around listening to understand, collaboration, empowerment, and compassion. I am a firm believer in working together with teachers, staff, families, and students to continue to achieve greatness. "Every child deserves a champion," a profound sentiment expressed by the late educator Rita Pierson, serves as my guiding principle in education. As I embark on my journey as a school leader, I firmly believe these words extend beyond students alone; they encompass every child, family, and educator. Indeed, it takes a village to nurture the complete development of education, and I wholeheartedly commit myself to being an integral part of that village.

At KES, I am committed to:

  • Learning the KES Way: While I am an experienced educator and now serving in a leadership role, it is my desire to continuously learn and grow alongside our students, staff, and community. I am committed to understanding the unique culture and values of Kenansville Elementary School, and I aim to listen actively and engage with everyone.

  • Supporting Our Students: Ensuring that every scholar feels valued, heard, and supported in their academic and personal growth.

  • Empowering Our Educators: Supporting Mrs. Hargrove's efforts to support our staff and provide the necessary resources to help each of you succeed in your roles.

  • Fostering a Collaborative Community: Strengthen relationships with families and the wider community to enhance our united and supportive network for our scholars.

  • Promoting a Positive School Culture: Encouraging and demonstrating respect, accountability, kindness, and a growth mindset among scholars and staff.

I am excited to get to know each of you and work together to make Kenansville Elementary School an even more extraordinary place for our students to learn and grow. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions, ideas, or concerns.

Thank you for welcoming me into the KES family. Let's make this a fantastic year together!
